This timeless monochrome theorem on paper was produced in England during the 19th century, circa 1850 to 1880. This artwork was made by using a stencil of the various flower forms, a popular art form for girls and ladies of leisure, the coloring of the stenciled design allowed for great individuality. Our example is very unusual as it is stenciled using an en grisaille/monochrome palette of blacks and grays. Perhaps stenciled during a period of mourning?

The stenciled painting features a naturalistic scene of a butterfly that is about to land on a collection of flowers. The artwork most likely came from a Victorian album, being later housed behind old glass in the most wonderfully thick period correct wooden frame with outer gilt slip. This is such a nice frame, a real quality piece. This is the perfect artwork for your wall, ideal for anyone who has a passion for gardening or nature.

Measuring: Frame width 10.75 inch (27.5 cm) by height 9.25 inch (23.5 cm). Aperture width 5.75 inch (14.5 cm) by height 4.25 inch (10.5 cm). Last image taken in natural English daylight.

Condition: Very light age darkening to the paper. An old surface chip to bottom right corner veneer. Evidence of the hangers being re-arranged during the frame's long life.
