This is one of our most favorite silhouettes at the moment, and we feel sure that you will adore her too. I hope that our enthusiasm for this original 1848 silhouette shines through from our research and description. We look forward to entrusting Isabella to her next guardian to keep her memory alive.

The painted nature of this highly detailed original 1848 artwork makes this a rare addition to your collection. At this time in the Victorian period not that many silhouette artists were working in color. Her face and head is painted in the usual lamp black with Gum Arabic and bronze highlight. Her dress however is painted in color with Chinese white detailing. It is a true gem........
This small portrait has the sitters details inscribed in pencil to the reverse 'Isabella Dodd The Riding 1848'. The artist of Isabella has taken great time to depict the fashionable details of the decade, and we can clearly see from her shimmering silk dress that Isabella comes from an affluent family (see her researched family history below).

FASHION DETAILS - This 18 year old young lady wears her hair centrally parted with large hair loops over her ears, the remainder of her hair is pulled in to a bun at the back of her head with plaited hair then coiled around the bun. She wears pretty gold drop earrings. She wears a high, rounded neck dress with fashionable lace detachable collar, her day dress has sloped shoulders with tight narrow sleeves. Her dress has a natural waist with pleated bodice terminating in a V to emphasize her small waist (aided of course by an under boned corset). The dress skirt is slightly bell shape with evidence of a small bustle at the rear, she would have several petticoats underneath. The dress is a pretty shade of terracotta silk that shimmers due to the shaded peach detailing by the artist.
ISABELLA'S Short Life - Isabella Dodd was baptized 5th November at St John Lee Church, Northumberland in 1830. Isabella very sadly passed away just 6 years after this silhouette was taken, on November 13th 1854 aged just 24 years of age. A young promising life, snuffed out!

In 1841 she is registered on the England 1841 census as living in a property called The Riding in the parish of St John Lee in West Acomb near Hexham, Yorkshire. She was the youngest daughter of Thomas Dodd Esq born 1791, who died in 1857 he is listed on that same population census as a man of 'independent means', and other directories note that he was a private resident and landowner. Thomas's wife was Mabel born in Bellingham, Northumberland in approx 1786, died 20th October 1870 (leaving a will and effects under £300). Thomas and Mabel Dodd Esq were comfortably off as they had two servants while living at the house called The Riding. The Dodd's had several children. Their first son John Bernard was born Nov 5th 1821, died May 12th in 1852. He attended St John's College at Cambridge University, England in 1840. In 1844 he emigrated to Sydney, Australia gaining his BA in 1850. Their second son Henry was an attorney solicitor who lived from 1824 to 1868. Son Charles was an insurance broker, living from 1825 to 1859. Son Thomas Edward lived from 1827 to 1844. They had two daughters, Emma Ester born in 1829, spinster and Isabella the sitter in this portrait. The family grave can be seen at St John Lee, St John of Beverley Churchyard

Interestingly Acomb village, their ancestral home is an ancient parish west of York. There is an eminence called 'Sivers Hill' where traditionally it is said that the body of Roman Emperor Lucius Septimius Severus was consumed to ashes.

Size: Frame 4 inch by 3.5 inch. Actual silhouette on card portrait 3 7/8 inch by 3 4/8". Last image taken in natural English daylight, albeit on a rather cloudy old day.

Condition: The old 19th century oval brass frame is good and sound with old bubbled glass, possibly not the original which would have been papier mache (but we prefer this lighter look). The silhouette has age darkening to the card ground and one small area of fading behind her bun, to the edge of the card.
