This rare and stunning original engraving was produced in England during the 18th century. The engraving depicts the British thoroughbred racehorse ‘Buzzard’ who was born in 1787 and was a son of Woodpecker. Buzzard had a successful racing career in England and lived until he was 24 years old.

Buzzard was later sold to Colonel John Hoomes (b 1749 - d 1805) who imported him to Virginia in 1798. Hoomes was an extremely wealthy gentleman; he owned the area of land which would become Bowling Green, Kentucky. Hoomes was a breeder and importer of thoroughbred racehorses and an important individual within the American horse racing scene.

The print was published on the 12th of October 1795 by Laurie & Whittle, 53 Fleet Street, London.

Robert Laurie (b abt. 1755 – d 1836) and James Whittle (b abt. 1757 – d 1818) were print publishers operating from 53, Fleet Street, London. Robert Laurie was an assistant to the prominent publisher Robert Sayer. The partners published engravings, maps, charts, and nautical works.

The print is housed behind its original old wavy glass in its original stained wood frame.
