A rare chance to own a large unframed needlework panel from 17th century Great Britain. This Charles II period panel would frame up beautifully, or indeed make a spectacular and very special cushion/pillow.

The scene depicts The Sacrifice of Isaac from the Old Testament story of Abraham and the life of Isaac. Old Testament stories were extremely popular in the embroideries of the 1600 to 1700 period. The designs were taken from the popular print books of the day, The Sacrifice was printed by Gerard De Jode (1521-1591) after Martin Vos. The engraving being published in the print book, Thesaurus Sacrarum Historiarum Veteris Testamenti. Please see a similar silk panel of The Sacrifice of Isaac dated 1659 that was a panel on top of a needlework casket held by the infamous Burrell Collection, Glasgow.

Our large panel has retained its vibrancy of the silk stitching in long and short stitch. Unfortunately the original plain woven silk sky has long since perished away over the centuries. Very small traces can still just be seen. We adore the angel messenger from God who is about to float down to save Isaac, her wings stitched in silver purl thread. The same thread used to highlight Abraham's knife and some tools by the flaming cauldron.

The ground is of ancient homespun linen and the side tapes are equally ancient and 100% all original, this panel would have originally been attached to a wooden stretcher.

Size:16 inch (41.5 cm) tall by 13.75 inch (35 cm)wide. Images taken in natural daylight.

Condition: As mentioned, the silk sky has perished. Age related toning to the linen background, our studio lights make it more apparent than in daylight. A small hole top right corner. A few other pinhead sized holes here and there, nothing serious or detrimental.

A fascinating survivor for your early English needlework collection.
