If like us you adore Georgian sepia engravings by the likes of Cipriani or Bartolozzi, then you will adore this allegorical example. One of a pair, each retailed individually. This engraving is offered unopened, therefore without opening it we are unable to confirm the title or engraver/publisher.

This delightful allegorical engraving was produced in England during the late 18th century, circa 1780. The engraving features a young lady in mourning, she is sat resting against a gravestone, possibly 'Charlotte' a popular 18th century heroine who was associated with The Sorrows of Young Werther, or possibly ‘Fame’ who was so often depicted at the tomb of Shakespeare. Housed behind old glass in a slightly later Regency era (1820's) gilt gesso frame and matching gilt mount. The backing paper is original and appears to be unopened. The frame is a little flaky, however it really does have the faded grandeur look that is so popular right now.

This is a wonderful country house antique that will display excellently in any interior. The perfect example of a traditional Georgian era artwork. Please see our collection of 18th and 19th art and antiques listed separately.

Measuring: Frame width 7.5 inch (19 cm) by height 9 7/8 inch (25 cm). Aperture width 5 1/8 inch (13 cm) by height 6.75 inch (17.5 cm).

Condition: As mentioned above, slightly flaking gilding to expose red under bole and white Gesso. Small vertical crack to gilding on the gilt mount at approx 11 o’clock.
