This delightful little box was produced in the town of Tunbridge Wells, England circa 1800 to 1820. Tunbridge Wells was a tourist attraction during this Georgian period, as the Spa waters drew people from far and wide. Who would not want to take the waters for medicinal purposes to improves one's health? A healthy souvenir industry grew where tourists could take home small mementos of their visit. Small hand painted or printed whitewood boxes, pincushions, sewing clamps, reel boxes etc were all popular with Regency ladies.

Our small box was from a set of four small boxes that sat inside a large gaming box. This little box and its partners would have stored gaming counters. Yes, the Georgians loved gambling!!

The box is constructed from sycamore (whitewood) and features a hand painted oval rural scene to the lid. The scene depicts a couple walking through an arcadian landscape, with a large tree in the center, and temple ruins to the left. The box is so well made; the hinges and open/shut perfectly. The box opens to reveal a hand painted Celeste blue interior, perfect for storing your favorite items of jewelry. Contents are shown for ambiance only, and are not included.

This is the perfect Georgian era antique; it is one of a pair which is each sold separately. Please see our collection of 18th and 19th century art and antiques.
