A stunning little late Georgian cylindrical drawstring beaded bag from the 1820 to 1840 period. This beauty has a really unusual structure with the flat circular beaded base to the bottom. The polychrome beadwork is exceptional, it covers the entire bag. We see a meandering floral frieze to the top, under the beige crochet drawstring border. One side shows a Georgian floral display in a pretty urn, the other side depicts a recumbent Sacred lamb holding the cross and flag. Each face has a different design between them, we see a cross and a very unusual 'veil of veronica' image. Often called simply the Veronica, is a Christian relic of a piece of cloth used by Saint Veronica to wipe Christ's blood and sweat away when she met him on the road to Cavalry. After using her veil in this way she noticed that it bore an imprint of Christ's face upon it. There is another frieze to the bottom this time depicting individual flowers, initials inside a wreath and a sacred heart. The circular base is beadwork made up of eight sections. We see roses, pansies and a star design to the centre. The lining is not the original, but it is old, it is a silk chiffon. The gold metal thread drawstring is 19th century and most likely original.
