This lovely watercolor painting was produced in England during the early 20th century, circa 1905. The painting depicts St James's Palace, London when viewed from the North gatehouse which is the Palace’s main entrance from Pall Mall. The Palace is the most senior royal palace in the United Kingdom.

The Palace is located in the City of Westminster; it is the ceremonial meeting place of the Accession Council and the London residence of several members of the royal family. The Palace was built by order of King Henry VIII in the 1530s on the site of a leper hospital dedicated to Saint James the Less.

This exceptional watercolor is on paper and really is a quality painting by a talented artist. The painting is SOOO detailed and perfectly captures the Palace and the life around it, notice the King's Life Guards on sentry duty each side of the entrance with their tall fur caps.

The watercolor is titled and signed by the artist reading ‘Frank Dobbs’. His full name was Francis Simeon Dobbs. ‘Frank’ or ‘Francis’ was a British artist who worked in watercolor and oils. He was born in the village of Gedney, Lincolnshire in 1873 and died in 1906; he is buried at Acton Cemetery, Ealing.

Francis studied art at school, attending Latymer's Foundation School and then Saunders Road School, Notting hill. He was the son of Simeon Dobbs (b 1845 – d 1909) Mary Ann Dobbs, née Leate (1849 – 1909). His father and mother were both music teachers as was his brother Frederick Montague Dobbs.

The painting is on paper or card and is housed in a late Victorian ebonised frame with lovely old bubbled glass.

Measuring: Frame width 7.25 inch (18.5 cm) by height 8 7/8 inch (22.5 cm). Aperture width 4 7/8 inch (12.5 cm) by height 6.5 inch (16.5 cm).

This is a stunning little painting that has such vibrancy with a high level of attention to detail. The perfect item for anyone who loves the English Royals or is an anglophile.
