A rare fragment of 17th century, circa 1660 to 1680 European silk embroidery that 200 years later was made into a wall pocket in the Victorian period, circa 1840. One of a pair, each sold individually...see last image. These will look stunning displayed on your sewing room wall, a real conversation piece from the Charles 11 period!!

This rare Renaissance raised work (stumpwork) embroidery was wrought on a plain woven green silk ground. The raised designs worked in silver wrapped silk thread. The designs then padded firmly with a wool core. The gold wrapped outer braiding and handles are to die for. See similar examples of metal raised work embroidery used in ecclesiastical vestments, purses and shoes during the 17th century. See a 1660's purse in the collection of The Bavarian National Museum.

Size: Circular pocket 5" tall by 5" diameter, with handle suspended 7.5" tall.

Condition: Very fragile, please carefully study our many images. Amazingly the 17th century needlework embroidery is very sound. The later Victorian pink silk backing and lining is very fragile and has become detached at the top to reveal the old newspaper stiffener.

However, this displays beautifully for those thrilled to own a 17th century textile.
