This utterly charming portrait of a lady was painted during the Victorian Era. This mid-19th century portrait depicts the female sitter in profile view. The artist has painted the picture in a combination of watercolor and gouache.
The lady is seen sitting on a wooden chair holding a green book and handkerchief in hand. We particularly like the attention to detail to the sitter's lace and pink silk ribboned bonnet. The artist really has lavished attention to the bonnet and her bangs or side curls in her hair, the artist was clearly very confident in painting costume. Her black silk dress is full of pleats and pin-tucks, skillfully rendered in clear gum arabic, her collar, handkerchief and stocking rendered in Chinese White. We also like the hand painted hatched watercolor background comprising of shades of blue and brown. This background really enhances the portrait.
The painting is on card and is housed behind old glass in its original birds eye maple frame complete with its original wood back boards. This is a stunning country house antique artwork that will display excellently in any setting. A lovely depiction of this mystery lady reader, who was perhaps a teacher or school mistress.
