The wonderful early 19th century portrait of a very kind looking lady dates from the 1800 to 1810 period. She was drawn in pencil/graphite on paper and heightened with watercolour/gouache very similar to the works of Henry Eldridge (1769-1821). She has sustained some historic darkening/staining to the paper from old damp English walls, and later reframed in a modern frame with gilt slip. However, neither detracts from her gentle and re-assuring presence.

We adore her gentle demeanour and of course the Regency fashion detailing. Her blue silk turban is divine and definitely narrows the date to 1800 to 1810 (see a similar silk turban at The met Museum from 1810). Other fashion details to note from this period, the Empire Style high waist embellished with a blue silk ribbon sash. The décolleté low square neckline, for modesty this lady wears a soft lace/muslin inner chemisette. She also wears a superbly draped black lace fichu/shawl. Matching blue pearl bracelet and the sweetest little pearl and hair morning fichu brooch. She sits in an Empire chair, and behind her we see walls clad with fashionable wallpaper. A woman of some means one would deduce.

Size: Frame 7 1/2 inch tall by 6 3/4 inch wide (19 cm by 17 cm). Sight 4 1/2 inch by 3 3/4 inch (11 cm by 9.5 cm).

Condition: As mentioned not perfect. Very old damp staining to left and right corners. The lesser damp stain to the left does reach the left side of her face. Re-framed in a sympathetic modern antiqued frame.

This lovely Regency character is ready to hang and admire.
