This delightful watercolor portrait miniature of a lady was produced in England during the early 19th century, circa 1810. This Regency era painting is by the sought after artist J. H. Gillespie (fl 1810 – 1830). Gillespie worked in London, Edinburgh and Liverpool, leaving in 1820 for Halifax, Nova Scotia. Profile paintings by Gillespie are highly sought after by collectors.
Gillespie produced several types of profile including “Black Grounds” which were rendered by the artist in a dark-grey body colour. The faces are shown in dull brownish-yellow, skillfully shaded with grey wash. We have an example of this style of work and several other types by the artist listed separately in our store.
