This charming portrait miniature of a handsome dark haired gentleman was produced in England during the early 19th century, circa 1815 to 1820.

This Regency era painting is by the sought after artist J. H. Gillespie (fl 1810 – 1830). Gillespie worked in London, Edinburgh and Liverpool. Profile paintings by Gillespie are highly sought after by collectors.

Gillespie produced several types of profile including ‘Black Grounds’ which were rendered by the artist in a dark-grey body colour. The faces are shown in dull brownish-yellow, skilfully shaded with grey wash. We have an example of this style of work and several other types by the artist listed separately in our store.

The male sitter is depicted in profile view. He has the fashionable short, natural hair, brushed forward, high over the forehead with fashionable side whiskers. He is wearing a double breasted tail coat with high rolled collar, M notch to the lapel. He wears a frilled cravat. verso we find an old label naming the sitter as ‘Dr Mellor of Coventry’. The painting is on paper or card and is housed behind convex glass in its original papier mache frame.

The sitter is Doctor George Henry Mellor (b 1790 – d 1843) of Coventry, Warwickshire, England. Dr George Henry Mellor was an eminent physician in Coventry. He was the son of Samuel Septimus Mellor (b 1756 – d 1836), who was a Lichfield based dealer in wine and alcohol. Henry’s mother was Mary Mellor, née Fowler.

The Mellor’s were close to the Yonge family. This came about when Samuel’s sister Sarah Mellor (b 1758 - d 1804) married Vernon Yonge (b 1757 – d 1822) in 1781. Vernon Yonge was the curate, and later rector of Haughton, Staffordshire. Several members of the family were listed in Dr Mellor’s last will and testament.
