This wonderful watercolor portrait was produced in England during the 18th century. The painting depicts a young Mary Queen of Scots. Mary, Queen of Scots (b 8 December 1542 – d 8 February 1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, reigned over Scotland from 14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567.
The portrait is on paper or card and is housed in the most decorative 19th century gilt gesso frame. The portrait was purchased as one of a trio, each sold separately in our store. They are each housed in such high quality frames, they are to die for. The frame features a label from Richard Watson of 141, Wardour Street, Oxford Street, and 5 and 6 Edward Street who were carvers and guilders and antique furniture dealers. They likely carried out some work on preserving the frame.
Measuring: Frame width 10.5 inch (27 cm) by height 11 1/8 inch (28.5 cm). Aperture width 4 3/8 inch (11 cm) by height 5 1/8 inch (13 cm).
Condition: Some minor chips to gesso and areas of gilt touch up, all to be expected on a frame of this type and age.
