This rare and highly decorative alabaster framed engraving depicts a view of Buxton Crescent and was produced in Derbyshire, England during the early 19th century, Regency period circa 1800 to 1810. The engraving would have been produced as a gift for the fashionable ladies of the day who were visiting the popular English spa town.

Buxton is a spa town in Derbyshire, England. A spa town is a resort town based on a mineral spa. Patrons visit spas to "take the waters" for their purported health benefits. The towns were particularly popular destinations during the Georgian and Victorian era.
Thanks to the Romans, Buxton's thermal mineral waters have drawn people to this area of Derbyshire for well over two thousand years. One of these visitors included Mary Queen of Scots. Centuries later when the health benefits of mineral water was increased due to easier transportation, the Georgians made such spa towns highly fashionable and a major tourist destination. Important visitors such as politicians, actors, poets, writers and industrialists all visited spa towns.

The Crescent in Buxton was the visionary centerpiece of William Cavendish, the Fifth Duke of Devonshire’s who wanted to use his profits from his copper mines to fund the establishment of a highly fashionable Georgian spa town in Buxton, Derbyshire. His beautiful, socialite wife Lady Georgiana Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire had spent many enjoyable periods in the spa town of Bath, Somerset (portrayed in the 2008 film The Duchess by Kiera Knightley and Ralph Hiennes). The Fifth Duke wanted emulate something similar for his wife. This magnificent building is one of the most architecturally significant buildings in Great Britain.

The print is housed behind its original convex glass in its original SOLID alabaster frame. The frame is absolutely stunning we just love the amber colorway of the local Derbyshire alabaster stone. This is a quality item that transports us back in time to the Georgian era. This is a rare survivor; we have not found another identical example. This fine print will appeal to a wide audience, the perfect item for your cabinet of curiosities, or for anyone who loves all things Georgian.

Measuring: Frame diameter 3 7/8 inch (10 cm). Aperture width 1 7/8 inch (5 cm). Please excuse the studio light reflections on the highly convex glass.

Condition: A few minor surface grazes to alabaster. Some dust trapped under the convex/domed glass.
