It was love at first sight when we saw this top quality Victorian portrait. This charming, reduced in size oil on board was produced in England during the 19th century, circa 1850. This original Victorian portrait most likely started life as a much larger portrait and because of damage was reduced in size to fit the current period correct frame. For us the size is now perfect, allowing any home big or small to display this very appealing portrait.
This absolutely gorgeous, small portrait depicts an idealised image of a young mother with her bright, inquisitive young daughter to her side. The artist was clearly very talented, and was very experienced in painting females. We love the way in which she has painted the mother’s loving brown eyes. We also love the way in which the artist has captured the light on both sitters faces, which almost glows from within. Very typical of good artists of this period. The painting is on Winsor and Newton Mill-Board and retains most of its original label; this label was used in circa 1845-50. This is a wonderful early Victorian painting that will display excellently. The painting is housed in a wonderful period correct frame mahogany veneered frame with superb construction joints, unglazed with inner gilt slip.
Provenance: The previous English owner had this portrait in her possession for many years. She purchased it as a pair in Bournemouth, England in the 1970s with another painting signed by Hélène Feillet of France. This smaller painting was sold to her as by the same artist. Having looked at the oil portraits by Feillet we see no reason to dispute the artist.
We therefore attribute this portrait to Hélène Feillet.
Joséphine Jeanne Hélène Feillet was born 2 November 1812 and died 9 December 1889. She was was a French painter and lithographer. A very competent female artist during the pioneering days of female 19th century artists, she exhibited at the Paris salon from 1836.
This is a wonderful painting by a talented and gifted artist, the painting will display excellently in any setting. Please see our collection of 18th and 19th century art and antiques listed separately in our store.
