This classical stipple engraving dates to the late 18th century, circa 1780. The scene is ‘Vigilance’ and features a lady holding a torch with a cockerel by her side. The print was engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi after a drawing by Giovanni Battista Cipriani; the piece was likely published by Susanna Vivares. The print is housed behind old glass in the most decorative gilded oval gesso frame.

Giovanni Battista Cipriani RA (b 1727 – d 14 December 1785) was one of the most highly regarded Italian painters and engravers. He was a founder member of the Royal Academy, and designed its diploma, which was engraved by his friend Francesco Bartolozzi.
Francesco Bartolozzi RA (b 21 September 1727 – d 7 March 1815) was one of the most successful Italian engravers, during his time working in London he was appointed ‘Engraver to the King.’

This is a decorative and uncommon engraving, it will display excellently in any interior. Please see our collection of 18th and 19th century art and antiques listed separately in our store.
