We could not resist the charm of this original 1843 sampler as although the world has changed dramatically since this sampler was wrought in 1846, the sentiment is just as important to us all today.
This oh so sweet Victorian sampler is of smallish proportions and housed behind glass in a very appealing thin gilt wood frame.
Worked on a fine, undyed linen ground in polychrome silk using a cross stitch. We see a country cottage with the words SWEET HOME either side. The cute cottage has a large dog to the base, the cottage is flanked by trees, with a picture perfect lush green lawn in front. Above this scene is typical 1840's floral arrangements designed in a very balanced and ordered way. Below the scene MARGARET 1843 BULLOCK. Three of the sampler's edges are turned under and hemmed and there is a blue selvedge on the right side consisting of a double blue row and a single blue row. Backed with fine linen.
Size:11.5" tall by 9.25" wide.
Condition. Good and mostly sound. Gentle age fading to some of the flowers. A small feint diagonal area of fading adjacent to the left little bird - our studio lighting make it more apparent than it actually is. The bottom hem is frayed with age.
