This is a scarce and highly luxurious little item just perfect for a VERY special antique dolls house. This decorative photographic image on enamel was produced in France by the revolutionary photographer Lafon de Camarsac in the year 1869. His full name was Pierre Michel Marie Alcide Lafon de Camarsac (born 1821- died 1905) and he worked in Paris, France. He was the first person to introduce a ground breaking and skilled method of producing photographic enamels in 1855. The photographs were created on enameled copper for use in jewelry, for use on porcelain and of course for luxury adornments for the finest furniture. In fact he exhibited this new process at the International Exhibition, in London, in 1862. Reference: Museum number: 38-1864 in the Victoria and Albert Museums’ online collection. You will be in awe of this glassy enamel with its very talented, revolutionary technique.

Our gorgeous Napoleon III era enamel depicts an image of a Greek/ Roman style person wearing a Phrygian cap. This soft bodied cap with a bent over tip dates from antiquity. Throughout Europe it was used to symbolize freedom or liberty a revolt against the establishment. The French embraced this motto during the French Revolution and to this day the national allegory of France, Marianne, is shown wearing a red Phrygian cap. See the famous painting by Eugene Delacroix of 'Liberty leading the People'. This Liberty theme was also embraced by the US just prior to the American Revolutionary War and Columbia herself signifies this theme of Liberty.

Set within its original sumptuous gilt bronze frame; the buttery gilt bronze frame is of a fantastic weight, oozing opulence and a sign of its great quality. We have not removed the piece from its frame. To the reverse of the enamel we find that the artist has signed and dated the piece.
Works by Lafon de Camarsac are highly sought after. The combination of the ornate French gilt ormolu frame and the classical profile create a feeling of opulence. This is a unique opportunity to own an important piece of photographic history. Last two images taken in natural English daylight.

Measuring: Frame height 2.25 inch (6 cm) by width 1 7/8 inch (4.7 cm). Aperture height 1.5 inch (4 cm) by width 1 1/8 inch (3 cm).

Condition: Very good with just light surface wear to the frame commensurate with its great age.
