A gorgeous little George III era needlework embroidery dating to the 1775 to 1800 period. It was love at first sight, we will be sad to part with this rarity.

This original 18th century silkwork was wrought in silk thread with human hair embroidery to the outline of the maiden's arm and also used to embroider the Italian script 'Na??? Ventura Fece' - 'Not what he had expected'. It is very rare to find a Georgian silkwork in this very small scale and of such refinement. Its coloring and condition is superb, it has been cherished over the centuries and kept away from its old enemy harsh sunlight.

Most likely brought back from a Grand Tour of Italy during the late 18th century when the European aristocratic classes completed their classical education by experiencing the sights and sounds of places made famous by classical literature. The scene in this small silkwork probably depicts a scene from the epic 16th century poem Jerusalem Delivered by Torquato Tasso that was re-popularized over the centuries in the forms of operas, plays and paintings. Its romantic ideals were particularly popular in the last quarter of the 18th century just before the French Revolution. Our needlework depicts a classically dressed Erminia and her lover Tancredi.

Housed within its Italian dark wood hollow cove frame with unusual gilt foil covering to the inner moulding to imitate parcel gilding. With original old bubbled glass.

Size: Frame 7" by 5.75" by 1". Silkwork 4.75" by 3.5"

Condition: Silkwork is in excellent condition for its vast age . The frame has some surface wear to the very edges and we have re-secured the back board as it was loose.
