We are pleased to offer this excellent portrait miniature profile of a Gentleman. The painting dates to the early 19th century, circa 1820. The portrait miniature is by the sought after artist J. H. Gillespie (fl 1810 – 1830). Gillespie worked in London, Edinburgh and Liverpool, leaving in 1820 for Halifax, Nova Scotia. This type of portrait miniature, executed on a black ground, is one of the rarest types produced by J. H. Gillespie. The portrait miniature is housed behind its original convex glass in its original papier mache frame. The picture is complete with a later Victorian antique picture dealers stamp verso to the portrait and paper label to the back of the frame. Please excuse any reflections on the convex glass.

‘The work on these profiles, painted on thick card, is of high quality. The black “Black Grounds” specified by the artist are rendered in dark-grey body colour. The faces are shown in dull brownish-yellow, skillfully shaded with grey wash. All the features are carefully and minutely drawn with a fine brush.’ ‘On each profile the sitter’s costumes is shown against a grey base colour, slightly lighter than that of the black ground.’ - Page 710 in - British Silhouette Artists and Their Work 1760 – 1860 by Sue Mckechnie. Please see illustrations 1531 and 1532 for an example of this technique. Please see pages 408 – 409 for a profile on the artist.
