This wonderful hand colored tinsel print was published by John Fairburn in England during the early 19th century, circa 1829. The print depicts a female called ‘Susan’ who was the popular theatrical character of the day. Susan was the main character from Douglas Jerrold's nautical melodrama called 'Black Eyed Susan'. This ever popuar play ran for over 400 performances at the Surrey Theatre, London, in 1829. It was so popular that in 1878 aspects of the story were parodied in H.M.S. Pinafore.

Susan's dress has hand colored highlights and sections of her bodice cut away with red silk inserted from behind. We adore the small cut steel facet ted studs embellishing her choker, hat and bodice.

Tinsel prints could be purchased from your local theatrical print seller. The idea being that you could decorate a print of your chosen hero/heroine of the stage within the comfort of your own home. This really was considered an adult hobby as the choice of embellishments such as foil, spangles, silk, leather, feathers allowed for great individuality. The whole effect is very pleasing and typical of the handy craft skills that were popular throughout the Georgian and early Victorian periods. See identical examples held by many of England's finest country houses and museums...Snowshill Manor, Gloucestershire and The V & A Museum, London.

The print was published by John Fairburn (fl. 1789-1840) who was a Regency era printer and publisher of popular prints. He also retailed and printed maps, charts and books for the general public. At the bottom of the print we find his address listed as Minories, London.
The print is housed behind old glass in its original painted black frame with a gilt slip. The text below the subject reads ‘SUSAN. London J. Fairburn Minories’. This is a decorative piece that will display excellently. We have be unable to discover this actual example.
