A very pretty little Regency era knitted stocking purse from the first quarter of the 19th century. Just one of a lifelong collection of antique purses from the same single owner estate. This charming example was knitted on very fine steel needles to incorporate the striped design. We see muted shades of green, blue and raspberry pink that all seem to complement each other so well. This little treasure has retained its original carved bone central securing rings and a real bonus is its highly decorative silk end tassels.
Size: Body 6.25", including end tassels 10"
Condition: Good but with signs of age. One edge has been historically repaired along its length. Both tassels have been reattached and a small hole to the purse body by one end tassel. This is all part of this purses history with previous owners stitching her to keep her alive. We would not recommend using antique purses of this VAST age.
A little beauty of understated Regency elegance.
Antique Georgian purses make for a fantastic collecting field as they are beautiful, easy to store and immediately connect one with their past. You have to wonder what conversations they have heard, what dancing they have seen and what secrets they might hold.
