A super find for your period costume collection, or special larger doll. This finely knitted and glass beaded christening cap originated circa 1820 to 1840 from Europe, most likely Germany. The cotton knit is so fine and the blue star beaded crown so pretty. Please see identical examples held at major world museums, the MFA and The Met.
Size: Too small for our adult cap mannequin but not new born either, would estimate for a 2 year old. Front to back 7", chin to top 7"
Last few images taken in natural English daylight.
Condition: All original including front and back ties, please do not expect pristine from a used item children's clothing of this age. There are one or two small little holes. There is age foxing to the white knitted ground as seen in our images. A historic darn to one area of floral beadwork and a historical alteration by the original owners mother which is rather sweet - the corner of the chin has been folded back and stitched, perhaps as it was rubbing on her chin.
