During the 19th century all ladies needed cases for holding either their calling cards to leave when they visited, or a case for holding their sewing bits and bobs. This case from the year 1861 would satisfy either function admirably.

Minutely woven in the most immaculately executed weave, one would think that this is fabric? But it is not, it is a very, VERY fine straw. This soft slip case has the date 1861 intricately woven into the design along with fancy borders and the initials W.H.L to the reverse. This small two section slip case would have been woven on a wooden mould as the outer and inner slip case are seem free, woven in the round.

Weaving in straw was a huge industry during the 18th and 19th century. Straw was used in all of Europe and America for making decorative items, for decorating almost all kinds of clothing from parasols to bodices and of course for making hats and bonnets.
We have a feeling that this beautiful case would have been bespoke made for a wealthy tourist as the fineness of weave/plaiting is truly exceptional. Maybe Swiss or French. For reference please see an open weave straw card case at The Cooper Hewitt Museum Accession Number 1931-84-15-a,b Object ID 18333123

Size: When closed 4.75" (12 cm) by 2.5" (6 cm)
