A beautifully hand carved, genuine antique 19th century crucifix. Purchased in France but most likely purchased as a souvenir in the 19th century from the Holy Land. This circa 1850 to 1880 larger cross has some very fine detailing unlike later, crudely carved examples. We see a carved mother of pearl shell crucifix that is supporting a beautifully carved Corpus Christi - with ribs and abdominal detailing. The Christi is complete with the dove/ Holy Spirit floating above the INRI sign post. INRI abbreviated version of 'Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum' or Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews. We also see angels at the end of the cross terminals and the skull at the base of the cross. The skull symbolizes Golgotha or Skull Hill where Jesus was crucified. This is where Adam was reportedly buried and the Lord was crucified where Adam lay. Complete with integral top hanger and plain reverse.

Size: 2.75" high by 1 3/8" wide

Condition: Excellent with no faults to mention.

A wonderful antique addition for your collection or for your sacred rosary.
