This wonderful full length watercolor portrait of a child was produced in England during the reign of George IV, in the year 1823. This painting features a small child wearing traditional Georgian era dress, the child is standing outside the grand entrance to a large estate. The young child is playing with a toy hoop. Hoop rolling or trundling was a popular child’s game during the early 19th century.

This signed and dated portrait is by the English artist William Watkin Waite (b 1778 – d 1856). Waite was an artist who was active during the Regency era in England. He is most well-known for his paintings of Abingdon’s most famous landmarks, Abingdon being the town in Oxfordshire, England where he lived throughout his life. Waite specialised in portraiture and was principally a miniaturist. His grandson Edward Wilkins Waite RBA was a prolific English landscape painter. There are few known examples of William Waite’s work.

This beautiful painting is housed behind old glass, with arched card matt and in the most decorative gilt frame featuring an ornate intertwined detailing and ribbon bow finial. The painting is signed and date by the artist bottom right corner reading ‘Waite 1823’.

Measuring: Frame width 11 7/8 inch (30 cm) by height 14 7/8 inch (38 cm). Aperture width 8 7/8 inch (22.5 cm) by height 10 3/8 inch (26.5 cm).

Condition: Age darkening to the old unbleached paper, some minor patches of surface lifting to the paper as can be seen in our images. To the antique frame there is some minor stable repaired sections to the raised intertwined detailing and slight age cracking to the bow finial.
Reference: Please see NPG D31759 in the National Portrait Gallery’s online collection for a print produced after a painting by William Watkin Waite.
