We are excited to present this very special and sought after pair of miniature watercolor portraits on paper which date to the late 18th century, to the year 1789. The brother and sister are both wearing traditional 18th century dress, the boy is holding a large rifle, making this example most unusual and desirable for collectors. His stance very much reminds us of Thomas Gainsborough's portrait of Mr and Mrs Andrews. Our miniature portraits are painted on laid paper and are housed behind old glass in decorative pearwood oval frames that are bang on typical of this 1780's date. Each of the backing boards features the artists ink inscription reading ‘Drawn by Mr J W B???n??? York 1789.’
This is fine pair, they are most unusual and are perfect for anyone who has a passion for 18th century art and antiques.
Measuring: Frame width 4.75 inch (12 cm) by height 6 1/8 inch (15.5 cm). Aperture width 3 1/8 inch (8 cm) by height 4.25 inch (11 cm).
Condition: Girl has a minor repaired crack to frame - very common with oval frames of this vast age. A slight crease to paper at 7 o clock. Boy has a small scratch to the old glass near his rifle. Some general darkening to the 18th century unbleached laid paper and general fading to the watercolors.
