This charming oil on canvas painting dates to the year 1929. This oil on canvas painting is by the British artist T. W. Peake who was active circa 1900 – 1930. The painting depicts a rural Shropshire scene with a fisherman in the foreground and a large Victorian mill in the background. We particularly like the couple stood next to the river with their pet dog, the lady in a typical 1920's cloche hat. The painting is signed ‘T. W. Peake’ and is dated ‘1929.’ The artist’s inscription verso reads ‘To Ethel Jones. From Mrs and Mr T. W. Peake. Feb 17th 1930.’ Housed in a naive dry pine frame. This original folk art painting is ready to hang.
There have been several known pieces by T. W. Peake, although little is known about the artist himself. Through our own research we believe he was Thomas William Peake (b 1872) who lived in Market Drayton, Shropshire who married Jessie Peake. There was also a Ethel Jones born in Market Drayton in 1900.
Measuring: Frame width 15.75 inch (40 cm) by height 11.75 inch (30 cm). Aperture width 13.75 inch (35 cm) by height 9.5 inch (24 cm).
Condition: This oil on canvas is showing its age a little paint crazing and some flaked away paint in small areas (seen via images). However, they do not detract from the visual appeal of this stylized painting.
This is would make the perfect addition to a folk art inspired interior.
