This delightful cut paper silhouette of a young child dates to the 19th century and is by the sought after English silhouette artist Mr W. Seville. This full length silhouette profile depicts a child playing with a riding crop, we particularly like the cut out collar section and the hand embellished bronzing to the child's hat and clothes. The artist's original hand written inscription verso reads ‘Cut with scissors by W. Seville ??? Dec 1838.’ Housed in its original wood frame with gilt slip and under old wavy glass, complete with original gilt metal top hanger.
Measuring: Frame width 7.25 inch (18.5 cm) by height 8.75 inch (22.5 cm). Aperture width 4 3/8 inch (11 cm) by height 6 inch (15 cm).
Condition: Minor surface wear to the original frame commensurate with age. The back has been retaped at some point to secure.
Please see plate 589 for a reference of the inscription and pages 269 -271 in Ref: Sue Mckechnie (1978). British Silhouette Artists and their Work 1760 – 1860 Pages 400 – 405.
