A very attractive little silk needlework upon paper brought to you direct from France as part of a collection of early 19th century needleworks upon paper, each sold separately...see last image.
This small devotional embroidery is a double sided needlework, the correct name for such a needlework is 'colifichet' - 'small trifle'. As if stitching upon paper is not difficult enough, the skill here lay in creating an identical mirror imaged needlework; with front and reverse showing as perfect without the usual untidy threads found to the reverse of a needlework!! the single sheet of paper is glazed front and back for your to marvel at the skill of the needleworker.
Our example shows two flaming sacred heart's beneath a cross. To the front hand written French script roughly translates as
'to these two truthful hearts you will not be happy'
The same image to the reverse with French script reading
'It is a sacred heart for the back. I want to set a month or day to rest at night from the tires of the day.'
Housed in its original stained and painted pine frame.
Size. Frame 8 2/8 by 5.75 inches
Condition: The paper has rippled with age to the front with some evidence in the undulation of paper darkening. The silk stitching has faded to the front. To the rear the stitching is bright and fresh from where it has been kept away from sunlight. The original blue paper edging to the rear is flaking away from age but easily replaced with fresh edging paper.
