This wonderful little silhouette of a boy dates to the early 19th century, circa 1810 to 1820. To place the creation of this profile portrait in history, it was during this time James Maddison was serving as the 4th president of the US, The Treaty of Ghent had been signed to end the 1812 war between the US and Great Britain, Francis Scott Key wrote the poem/ later National anthem The Star Spangled Banner.
Our cut paper silhouette of a young 10 to 14 year old boy features detailed bronzing over gum arabic highlights to the boys hair and clothes. The boy sports the usual short hairstyle for this Regency era with hair being cut two to three inches in length with fringe swept to the side. He wears a tailcoat with high collar at the rear with M notch to the lapel. He wears a high necked shirt with neck cloth....very much imitating the adult men's fashion at this time. The silhouette is housed behind convex glass in a small papier mache frame with a gilt acorn hanger. This is a completely original item that is depicting a charming sitter.
Measuring: Frame width 3 7/8 inch (10 cm) by height 4.75 inch (12 cm). Aperture width 2 inch (5 cm) by height 2.5 inch (6 cm).
Condition: Natural age crazing to the painted surface. A small feint area of paper darkening under the truncation of the boy. Small chip to one of the corners of the reverse of the frame (as seen in image).
