A precious French sweet or candy box, boite a dragees from the second half of the 19th century. This circa 1850 small, circular pressed card box with its original inner mirrored lid once held fancy confectionery. It was considered a real treat to visit your local chocolatier and hand select sweet bon bon delights to place in your individually chosen box. The real pleasure was then unveiling this highly decorative candy box to both friends and visitors; the surprise when they saw the gorgeous outer box and the inner confections that lay within!!
Our small example would surely impress, as at first one would believe the entire box to be made from edible chocolate, it indeed looks good enough to eat. Only on closer inspection can one detect that the clam shell lid is expertly made from pressed card with gilt metal fittings and embossed card borders. This is a very rare design.
This is the perfect addition to your candy box or snuff box collection...see our last image for display ideas...each item retailed separately.
Size: 2.5" diameter by 1" high.
Condition: After 160 plus years very good. A slight depression to the right side of the shell lid and a resulting ding to the adjoining gilt metal edge. Minor wear to the card edges where the two halves join. It opens and closes well and the original intact mirror with gilt paper edging is a real bonus.
