An exceptionally beautiful and exceptionally rare miniature portrait. This mid 18th century watercolor/gouache portrait is of the young French King Louis XIV. The portrait and the delicate and intricate cut paper decoration are all part of a single sheet of paper/parchment. Housed under original domed old glass with reverse, very light and elegant eglomise border and in its original 18th century oval fruit wood frame. This is a French treasure indeed. We see two exceedingly decorative art forms combined in one truly beautiful object for your collection. We fell head over heels in love with this treasure, we hope that you will too.......
This tiny portrait was painted circa 1770's as a remembrance to King Louis XIV (1643 to 1715). Louis was a young boy when he inherited the throne after his Father's Louis XIII death. Louis reined as an absolute monarchy, in his eyes, placed there by God to rule. He took the orbital Sun as his emblem hence the name Sun King (Roi Soleil). For reference see the portrait of young King Louis XIV by Justus van Egmont (1601 to 1674).
The portrait miniature of the young King is surrounded by an integral cut paper border of lace like paper flowers and leaves. This exacting paper cutting art form was popular during the 18th century. Paper cutting dates back to the early Chinese dynasties and each country seems to have its own version. In Germany and the US it is often referred to as Scherenschnitte. In France and Italy the art form was often practiced by Nuns and called canivet - the french word for Knife as small knives were used to cut the paper.
Size: Oval 18th century frame 5.75" (14.5 cm) by 5.25" (13 cm). Actual central portrait 1.5" (4 cm) by 1.25" (3.5 cm).
Condition - The cut paper and miniature painting are in very good to excellent condition. As one would expect, there are some MINUTE breakages to the feather like, cut paper detailing seen to the outer dots surrounding the portrait. The Georgian wooden frame has some minor nibbles after its 200 plus years as one would expect.
