A beautiful devotional item from 18th century Europe. This butterfly shape cushion is profusely embroidered with silk thread and silk woven fabric. The shape is of a butterfly and the central outline of a winged butterfly can be seen by the use of gilt metal braid. A border of 18th century bobbin lace completes the glorious composition. To the reverse is its original blue woven silk backing. The filling is of some form of wadding possibly folded paper that is then sandwiched between paper - all absolutely original .
This palm sized cushion would have been made by a convent as a devotional item come functional pincushion. The body of this cushion should contain a folded paper amulet of a saint or religious figure this is to bring the owner good luck, health etc depending on the saint depicted. We have not opened this piece but you can clearly see and feel folded paper under the original silk backing fabric.
Size:6" by 4.5" by 0.5" including bobbin lace edging.
Condition: All untouched and original. Free from any repairs, offered in pure 18th century condition. This item at least 238 years old, maybe older, please do not expect perfection. All six original spangles (sequins) have long since disappeared. There is general age darkening to the surface with some minor perishing to the silk ground on the corner tips. Some fading to the silk embroidery, this piece would have been vibrant. Tarnished darkening to the metal braid and bobbin lace. The blue silk reverse has two insect holes, perished areas to the silk and some light marks.
