This wonderful watercolor portrait of a dog is by the sought after Scottish artist John Murray Thomson, RSA, RSW (b 1885 – d 1974). He was a talented artist; he was born in Crieff, Scotland and attended the Edinburgh Art School. Thomson is most well-known for his watercolor paintings; he traveled the world’s zoo’s capturing the exotic animals, including penguins and polar bears. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and the Walker Gallery in Liverpool. He was known to have a particular passion for paintings dogs; we feel this is illustrated in our painting of ‘Pixie’.
The painting is signed by the artist bottom left ‘J. Murray Thomason’ and is housed behind old glass in a period correct 1930s oak frame and behind old wavy glass. The original artist label is displayed verso reading ‘Pixie. June 1932. Water colour drawing by J. Murray Thomson, R. S. W.’ Measuring: Frame width 13 inch (33 cm) by height 15 1/8 inch (38.5 cm). Aperture width 7.75 inch (19.5 cm) by height 9.75 inch (25 cm). Condition: Painting and frame in very good condition.
