This wonderful miniature handmade Ditty box was produced by a sailor at sea during the early 19th century, circa 1810 to 1820 or quite possibly by a prisoner of war during the Napoleonic wars. This handsome item of Georgian treen has a removable lid that is inlaid with sections of stained bone (materials that would easily come to hand either at sea or in prison). The body of the box is hand carved from one solid block of wood. There is not a single nail used in the construction of this box. This is unique little item that will display excellently. This is the perfect item for anyone who collects early treen, or has a passion for all things maritime.
