This original and decorative watercolor on card dates to the late 19th century, to circa 1880. The painting is by the highly sought after British artist Stephen T Dadd (fl 1880 – 1912). The painting features a most detailed study of a Bloodhound coursing through a field. The painting is signed ‘S. T.D’ in the bottom right corner. This original painting is housed behind glass in an attractive modern gilded frame.
Stephen T Dadd was born in Poplar, Middlesex, England in 1859; he came from a family of artists. He was a specialist painter of dogs; interestingly his occupation is listed in the 1881 census as an ‘Artist Animal Painter’. Stephen’s illustrations were regularly published in the London Illustrated News.
Measuring: Frame width 11.75 inch (30 cm) by height 8.75 inch (22.5 cm). Aperture approximately width 6.75 inch (17 cm) by height 3 3/8 inch (8.5 cm).
Condition: The small, rectangular painting is in very good condition. The frame although decorative and sturdy, upon closer scrutiny has some old filler to a corner joint of the inner slip. Some minor areas of gilt touch up around the outer decorative beading and back corners.
