This rare and decorative bat printed porcelain cup and saucer (delicate stippled over printing) was produced in England during the 1795 to 1810 period. The cup and saucer features a black and white bat printed maritime scene which is known as ‘Watchers on Shore’. We particularly like the ‘Spode’ type handle. This pattern is the subject of research among pottery and porcelain groups, it is believed that it was produced by ‘Factory Z’ possibly Thomas Wolfe at Stoke on Trent, England. This is an uncommon item; it is very desirable to have the cup and matching saucer in this rare pattern. This is the perfect item for anyone who collects early English porcelain or has an interest in maritime history.

Measuring: Cup width including handle 4 1/8 inch (10.5 cm) by height 2.25 inch (5.5 cm). Saucer diameter 5 3/8 inch (13.5 cm).

Condition: Both pieces have some minor surface wear, more so the saucer. Two minor crazing lines to the glaze on the base of the cup, not hairlines. Three hairlines to the rim of the saucer with two firing faults to the foot rim.

This is a quality piece of porcelain that is over 200 years old.

Reference: See an identical cup in the Printed British Pottery and Porcelain Exhibition and an identical teapot owned by The Northern Ceramic Society
