This wonderful 19th century artist’s sketch book belonged to the young Edith Mary Jelley, nee Brock (b 1882 – d 1976). Edith M. Jelley (Exh. 1922 – 1940) was an artist who was elected to the RBSA (Royal Birmingham Society of Artits) in 1953 and exhibited with them in Birmingham, England. She has also exhibited in London at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolor.
Edith was the second wife of the sought after British artist James Valentine Jelley (b 1856 – d 1950). They married in Birmingham in 1917. James was a teacher, painter of watercolours and oils; he exhibited at many exhibitions and galleries including the Royal Academy. James was an employee of the Birmingham School of Art and a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and served as its president from 1932-1934. The artist Sidney Harold Meteyard studied under Jelley at the Birmingham Central School of Art.
The sketch book is dated to Christmas 1894, is half complete and features a variety of pen and ink and pencil sketches and illustrations by the artist; some are signed/monogrammed and dated. There is a total of approximately 27 works of art in the album covering a variety of subject matter including Asian inspired drawings, birds, ships, Native Americans, tradition portraits, Greek mythological scenes and geometric designs. We love the works titled ‘Egyptian Lady’, ‘The Crown of Success’ and ‘Water Babies’, they are simply stunning considering they were drawn by a young girl who at this early showed considerable artistic talent.
Measuring: Width 7.25 inch (18.5 cm) by height 8.75 inch (22 cm). Depth 3/8 inch (1.5 cm).

This is a fantastic item that is wholly original. It would be invaluable to the family of the artist. This wonderful album has survived over 100 years, the works in the album shows the early talent of this artist who was just 12 at the time.
