A period ladies drawstring work bag reticule, sadly just the one half of the bag. It is so decorative being laden with faded grandeur, we simply could not resist its charm. It is also SOOO beautifully framed, that we wanted to offer you the opportunity to own this ancient textile treasure. It is a show stopper.....see similar examples held at The Museum of bags and Purses, Amsterdam.
This front face of a genuine 1800 era work bag has been salvaged by a good soul, who like us appreciates the sheer skill and beauty that went into the making of this circa 1790 to 1810 period bag. Due to its larger proportions we believe this to be a workbag for storing one's knitting, knotting or sewing, rather than a smaller, later reticule for storing one's coin purses, dance cards, smelling salts etc.
Our example, most likely French in origin is of plain woven silk satin with a top taffeta drawstring flap. The silk satin body lavishly encrusted with delicate colored ribbon work flowers, leaf shaped mirror spangles, beadwork and buttery gilt rings (that would originally have been found on the inner top edge for securing the drawstring). Later housed in THE most delicious French Empire lemon gilt frame (circa 1815) with corner gilt metal garlands and original old bubbled, striated glass.
Size: Frame 13.25" by 11.25" (33.5 cm by 29 cm). Sight size 9.25" by 7.5" (23.5 cm by 19 cm)
Condition: Please study our images and be aware that as gorgeous as it looks, on closer inspection this ancient one side only of a reticule is in poor shape and is extremely fragile. If condition is important to you we respectfully suggest that this is not the item for you. As you can see from our images the silk has melted away in several areas to expose the backing cloth, particularly to the right side. The frame is good and sound with minor age darkening to the gilding and a some surface wear to the edges.
This piece will display excellently (please keep it away from sunlight).
