Oh my, if you like your early antique 19th century purse to have the WOW factor, then this French purse has your name on it!

This is a truly exceptional antique beaded and micro beaded purse that dates to the 1815 period. French in origin, this purse screams French Empire sophistication - one can imagine the Empress Josephine herself owning this example as it is sheer quality and sheer luxury. The black, green and apricot coloring reflective of the new colors returning to France from Napoleon's successful military campaigns in Egypt.

The black, finely netted silk mesh body tastefully adorned with gold and steel faceted micro beads. Look to the reverse where even the opening is bordered with gold micro beadwork!! The lower quarter of this purse has THE most delicious harlequin design, each lozenge being hand embroidered in reverse or half cross stitch using green and apricot silk, each diamond shape edged in gold and steel beads. Additionally each row of embroidered lozenge is intersected by a row of steel beaded lozenges. The profusely encrusted base gives this purse a wonderful feeling of balance and weight when held in one's hand. To finish we have the original top and bottom gold and steel twisted tassels. We also have a replacement but perfectly suitable tiny Georgian cut steel slider, the original we would think would have been gold.

Size: Purse body 9" by 2.25" at its widest point. Total hanging length including top and base tassels 13.5".

Condition: Very good but not quite perfection. As is so very common, sadly the steel adornments on this antique purse have aged - the steel showing rust. The gold beads are in excellent order, leading us to believe that they are individually gilded in buttery gold. One cut steel dropper to the right base tassel is damaged. There are four micro gold beads missing to the opening slot top edge.

This beauty still glistens and sparkles and is sure to impress its next guardian....we guarantee that you will adore this fine and rare example.

Please stop a while and browse our collection of antique purses. They are a personal passion and we have a fantastic array of examples to offer....they make for a mesmerizing collecting field and they also make a unique gift.
