This superbly decorative and small watercolor dates to the 19th century, circa 1883 (see verso) and features a rural landscape scene in the Lake District, England. The Lake District was and still is a very popular tourist destination. Since the 17th century artists, poets, writers and tourists have been drawn to this area of Northern England because of its powerful sense of natural drama - they called it 'The Sublime'. Our charming watercolor would have been painted by a Victorian visitor to the area who was clearly a good artist. We love freshness of the greenery as if a rain shower has just passed, also the imposing hills in the background and the texture of the locally hued stone wall. The watercolor is housed behind old wavy glass set within an attractive period Rosewood veneer frame with inner gilt slip. This is the perfect item for your English inspired cottage interior.
