A deliciously rare pair of mother of pearl knitting needle guards, knitting needle protectors. The quality of the hand carved bird and foliage on this pair of guards is exceptional. This delightful Regency pair would have been retailed in Paris by a luxury retailer in the Palais Royal shopping arcade. Knitting was considered a talented pastime in continental Europe with very fine gauge steel needles used to create the finest knitted items. As it was easy for stitches to slip off these fine needles, end finials were produced to slip on either end of the needle which was held in place by ribbon, later after its invention post 1850 elastic cord was used. Knitting guards were produced in luxury materials such as gold, silver and mother of pearl, also in less refined examples bone or wood.
This stunning pair with their original green silk ribbon were purchased as part of a collection of scarce and early knitting needle guards, please see the very special porcelain examples in our store (shown in last image).
Size: The taller bird finial is 2.25" high, the plainer base finial is 1 13/16" high. The knitting needle hole diameter approx 4 mm.
Condition: Two little chips to the foliage as is so common, seen to the tip of the leaf under the birds beak and to the leaf tip on the base of the other. One missing piece of decoration to the bird finial's right side seen just to the left of the thimble on main image....all hard to distinguish but mentioned for accuracy. The original green silk ribbon is delicate.
