This exuberant love letter case is a gorgeous survivor from the 1780 period. French in origin, this small luxury item was produced at one of the Paris workshops, it is decorated in a complex incised gold colored guilloche Vernis Martin finish over a cylindrical sandalwood carcass with its original yellow metal fittings. This romantic love letter case was produced at a time of great decadence at the French aristocratic court when luxury items were in high demand. This would have been used by an aristocratic lady to exchange love letters and also hide them safely away in her gown pocket or secret box or drawer. It now makes for a perfect romantic gift or Valentine.
Size: 5 1/8" (13 cm) by 7/8" (2.3 cm) diameter. We are limited to just nine images, please feel free to contact us for more.
Condition: The green and lacquered gold foil design is so timeless, influenced by the luxury European guilloche enamelling. As is often the case with the multi lacquered Vernis Martin items, there are approx half a dozen small dints to the surface. The inner natural tube slide allows for perfect opening, being free from warping. This inner tube slide does have an old stable crack and an old original paper owner or collectors label to the outer.
One just has to wonder who owned this beauty back in the 1700's and what stories she could tell???
Please see our other 18th century gold and mother of pearl needlecase etui from the same collection seen in the last images, each retailed separately.
