We are delighted to offer this delightful 19th century English watercolor painting of the tidal, Hooe Lake, Nr Plymouth, Devon, England. Signed in pencil C Davidson bottom left and titled in pencil Hooe, Nr Plymouth bottom right. Later professionally framed within a gorgeous mount, this is a splendid addition to your home...we will be truly sad to part with it.
Charles Davidson, Brotish 1824 - 1902, a member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS).
The tidal lake scene is very dramatic with the clouds indicating a storm has just passed. Finer weather is attempting to break through. Villagers in the pretty stone cottages have hung out their washing and a strong wind blows their washing dry. Chimneys billow out wispy plumes of smoke and a receding tide laps against the shore. Follow the shore along to find local fishing boats at their rest, the catch landed for the day. We adore the washing and smoke heightened in white gouache.
Hooe sits on an ancient site adjacent to the estuary of the River Plym. Hooe was built over the site of the once grand 50 roomed 16th century mansion and estate of Radford, the family seat of the Harris family ( the house sadly demolished in the 1930s). Christopher Harris a close friend of Sir Francis Drake (Spanish Armada).
