A finely painted miniature watercolor profile of a Regency lady of the 1815-20 period. She wears a chestnut brown walking dress or pelisse coat with detailed, almost Greek key design puff top sleeve, deep collar and Chinese white heightened high lace ruff. The detailing is superb as you can clearly see every feature including those gorgeous blue eyes, refined nose and very detailed hair. Also visible is her long applied gilt watch chain. Her hair is worn swept into a chignon to the back of her head with short side curls to the temple. She wears matching tortoiseshell mantilla comb and slides - note her chignon is not quite to the top of her head as the later Apollo Knot fashion. This portrait came with several other rare James H Gillespie miniature portraits and there is a strong possibility that this too could be by his hand.
Our watercolor portrait is very well painted capturing the freshness and beauty of this twenty something lady. It is well painted on strong paper board (Bristol board). See our many images of the painting outside of the frame.
Size: Frame 8.25" by 5.25". Actual oval watercolor 3.25" by 2.75" approx.
Condition: Please note that the frame is in very poor condition: it is dry and crazed with age, possibly from being displayed above a fire. There is a very old repair under the top hanger and the back of the frame has been given a keyed surface where perhaps it was going to be converted to an easel frame. There is a small flaked chip to the front of the old flat glass at 2 o'clock (see image). The watercolor on card is offered in good condition with general age toning to the card.
