This intimate European portrait of a lady seated on a balcony dates to the early Victorian period, circa 1860. The portrait was painted on canvas later laid to board; it is housed in the most wonderful ornate gilded gesso frame. The painting was painted by an accomplished artist; the attention to detail and use of vibrant rich colors are spectacular. The sitter is wearing a vivid blue dress with a rich dark red fur coat. She is displaying her best gold jewelry including earrings, brooch, ruby bracelet and ring. The painting is similar to works by the German artist August Ferdinand Hopfgarten.
Measuring: Frame width 11 inch (28 cm) by height 13 inch (33 cm). Frame depth 1.25 inch (3 cm). Aperture width 7.75 inch (19.5 cm) by height 9.75 inch (25 cm).
Condition: The painting will display excellently, however there are some areas of old restoration and age related surface marks that are not immediately apparent but noticeable on close scrutiny. There is some restoration to the area around the sitter’s right arm and left elbow, and to a small patch immediately above it. There is a slightly uneven section of the canvas which runs horizontally under the sitter's left elbow. A small indentation at 3 o clock near the edge of the canvas. The frame is in good condition, there are some minor chips and cosmetic cracks to the gesso which have been sympathetically touched up.
A stunning portrait perfect for the antique costume collector or reenactor or enthusiast.
