This wonderful pencil and watercolor side profile portrait of a lady dates to 1845. The painting is by the British artist Moses Haughton the Younger (born 7th July 1773 Staffordshire-died 26th June 1849). He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1808-1848. Moses was the nephew of the painter Moses Haughton the Elder. Moses Haughton the Younger was a painter and engraver. In 1803 Haughton became the resident engraver to the renowned painter Henry Fuseli. He developed a strong bond with Fuseli, after Fuseli’s death in 1825, Fuesli's widow Sophia moved into the Haughton household.

Signed verso ‘Mrs Jonathan Howl, nee Sarah Aston 1845. Moses Haughton Fecit.’

The sitter is Sarah Aston who was born in 1816; in 1843 she married Jonathan Edwards Howl in St. Martin, Tipton, Staffordshire, England. Jonathan Howl was a wealthy gentleman who was a coal agent, later coal master at the iron and coal works at Tibbington Colliery. The watercolor is painted on J Whatman English watermarked paper and housed in an attractive gilt gesso frame under old glass.

The label reads 'Charles E. Luton, Picture Frame Maker and Dealer In Works Of Art, 214, Broad Street, Birmingham.' The picture would have been retailed in Charles Luton’s shop in circa 1877.

SIZE: Frame width 8.5 inch (21.5 cm) by height 11 inch (28 cm). Frame depth 0.75 inch (2.5 cm). Watercolour width 7.25 inch (18cm) by height 9.75 inch (24.5 cm).

CONDITION:The watercolor is in good condition with some minor foxing and darkening to the top of the paper. The frame is in good condition with some minor surface wear and a few minor chips to the Gesso, one tiny area of gilt touch up to a small patch on the bottom section of the frame.
