This is a fabulous George III period English reverse print on glass. This portrait is THE perfect artwork for the period interior or historical fashion collector as we adore the detailed 18th century costume including blue silk over cap with her matching blue silk hooded cape or cloak. Complete with Hogarth frame and old bubbled glass. This Georgian engraving of Miss Louisa Williams is ready to hang and admire....the magic of reverse engravings on glass is more revealed when viewed as they were intended by gentle candlelight.

Reverse glass printing was a very fashionable process introduced at the start of the 18th century. It involved transferring a print/engraving to the reverse of a sheet of glass, then varnishing and hand coloring from behind to resemble an oil painting.

Our print dates to the year 1771. Our sitter is Miss Louisa Williams after a painting by Farrel. The print was printed by James Wilson for the publisher William Darling (b 1737 – d 1789). William Darling was an engraver, publisher and print seller who address is listed as No.3 Great Newport Street, London. The print is housed in a slightly later Hogarth type frame, the print displays its original price of 1s 6 d (1 shilling 6 pence). This is a rare print that displays excellently, a beautiful portrait.

For an example of the non reverse painted engraving please see Museum number: 1867,1214.741 in the British Museum Online Collection.
